What to see in Bocairent
The first settlements discovered on the territory of Bocairent belong to the Neolithic. The city acquired its actual appearance during the reign of the Moorish invaders here during the VIII-XIII centuries.
Because of its rich history, Bocairent is home to many historical sights, the most famous are the Moorish caves and the old quarter of the city.
Moorish Bocairent Caves
The Mauritanian caves are an ensemble of caves artificially created in the X and XI centuries, from the outside looking like a kind of windows, cut right in a vertical rock.
These artificial caves used to be used mainly as storage facilities for food by the Moors. The narrow man-made holes connecting separate rooms served as a kind of labyrinth, so it was almost impossible for a person from the outside to understand the complex system of passages and transitions for defensive purposes.
